SOUTH PHILLY ASPARAGUS

Ingredients

1 bunch fresh asparagus (about 11/4 pounds), lower
portions snapped off
3 tablespoons margarine
1 cup bread crumbs
Salt and pepper to taste
¼ cup slivered almonds (optional)

Preparation

Steam the asparagus until tender, about 12 to 15 minutes. Set aside.
Melt margarine in a sauce pan and add breadcrumbs. Sauté over medium heat until slightly browned.
Layer breadcrumbs and asparagus in an oven proof serving dish, top with slivered almonds and warm thoroughly in a 350 degree F. oven, about 10 minutes. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkling of Romano or parmesan cheese.
