Removal and Preservation of Trees

Removal and Preservation of Trees

The purpose of the Bridgewater tree ordinance is to control and regulate the removal of trees in order to prevent conditions detrimental to the environment such as soil erosion and increased stormwater runoff. This ordinance discourages excessive clear cutting to preserve the shade tree canopy of Bridgewater, protecting property values and the general welfare of the public.

All trees, living or dead, require a permit application for their removal. The Tree Removal Application should include name, address, purpose for removal, quantity, diameter and species of tree (if known) as well as a map or drawing detailing the location of the specified tree. Additional information regarding the project supervisor and the planned date of commencement would be appreciated to promptly address each application. A permit may or may not be necessary as deemed by the Environmental Officer.

Violation of this ordinance is enforced by the Environmental Officer and the Township Zoning Officer and may result in a fine of up to $1000.00 per tree and the subsequent replacement of trees.Click here to see the full version of the Township tree ordinance or visit us at the Bridgewater Municipal Building for additional information including definitions, exemptions, and fees, or call the Environmental Officer at 908-725- 6300 ext. 258.
