Overview
The Township Municipal Court derives its authority from the State Constitution and is
administered under the authority of the State Supreme Court. It is the responsibility of
the Municipal Court to receive and file all complaints charged by law enforcement officers
and private citizens, for offenses which occur within Bridgewater Township. The kinds of
complaints filed may charge a person with violations of State traffic laws, Disorderly
Person Offenses (sometimes called misdemeanors in other states), and Township Laws, called
Ordinances. Other violations filed with the Court include Fish & Game Offenses,
Weights and Measures, and State and County park violations.
Any person charged with a violation of a law is entitled to enter a plea of "Not
Guilty" to an offense and enjoy the Constitutional presumption of innocence and have
a trial. The presiding Judge hears the testimony of each side, the complainant and the
defendant, any witnesses, then makes a decision based on the facts presented. Municipal
Court sessions are always open to the public.
The Municipal Court is responsible for keeping the official records of violations, and
reporting the results of trial and/or payments of tickets/summonses to the various
departments needing the information, such as the Division of Motor Vehicles, the New
Jersey State Police Identification Bureau, the Township of Bridgewater, and other
agencies.
The Bridgewater Municipal Court meets each Tuesday (day) and Wednesday (day and evening).
